Before we can talk about effectively leading your team, let’s talk about you. Leadership always starts with leading ourselves. Have you reflected on your own level of burnout? After a year of enduring the pandemic, burnout is a global problem.

Below are some questions to ask yourself. Over the next three days, we will define the three components of burnout so that you can see where your self-assessment and the specific elements of burnout may connect. Next week, we’ll share strategies to address burnout.

These questions are based on guidance from Jennifer Moss, author of the forthcoming book The Burnout Epidemic, and a Harvard Business Review email series. You can also use these questions with your team, but we recommend starting with reflecting on them yourself first.

Over the past week at work…

-How overwhelmed did you feel, on a scale of 1 to 5? (1 is lowest, 5 is highest)

-How many days did you work later than you should?

-How many days did you answer emails after hours?

-How effective did you feel, on a scale of 1 to 5?

-How productive did you feel, on a scale of 1 to 5?

-How much fun did you have, on a scale of 1 to 5?

Tomorrow, we’ll start digging into what defines burnout.
